Alan Turing was a true mathematical genius and pioneer in the fields of computation and information theory. This demonstration wasn’t just a test of a new technology-it was The Turing Test. With this type of AI voice assistant technology becoming more pervasive, all of us have at one point or the other over the last few years felt compelled to sheepishly ask the customer representative or chat interface, “Are you a human or a bot?”

In this instance, no contract had been signed. The technology deftly maneuvered around the usual questions and nuances of human language, even parroting some very human pauses “umms” and other filler words.īut there’s something not right about watching someone be fooled. The demo was conducted live on stage in real-time with an audience of tech bloggers. The demo brought to mind some of Steve Jobs’ famous product keynotes, as Google Duplex was used to book a hair appointment over the phone with a stylist unsuspecting that she was speaking with a machine. We show how some disciplines and places have affinities towards certain type of tests, and which tests are more influential according to scientometric indicators.In May 2018, Google showcased a demo of Google Duplex, an AI-based technology that engages in real-world conversations to carry out simple tasks. Behavior tests are more synthetic and more practicable, but give a stronger role to ex post human interpretation of behavior.

Architecture tests main advantage is that they could apparently test for qualia, a feature that is getting an increasing attention in recent years. Each category has its strengths and weaknesses. The tests put forward in their work typically fall under one of two grand categories: architecture (the presence of consciousness is inferred from the correct implementation of a relevant architecture) and behavior (the presence of consciousness is deduced by observing a specific behavior). This paper provides an analytic review of the existing tests for machine consciousness proposed in the academic literature over the past decade and an overview of the diverse scientific communities involved in this enterprise. The accelerating advances in the fields of neuroscience, artificial intelligence, and robotics have been reviving interest and raising new philosophical, ethical or practical questions that depend on whether or not there may exist a scientific method of probing consciousness in machines.
